About Us
The Gamma Omicron chapter of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc. was chartered on the University of Florida campus on Thursday January 24, 1998. By six incredulous men who saw displeasure with the current standing of Black Greek letter chapters on their campus. They formed the Gamma Omicron chapter with the intent of doing something never done before and forcing change the within the University of Florida Community. Since being chartered, Gamma Omicron has gone on to win numerous awards including international chapter of the year and best philanthropy just to note a few.

Here at the Gamma Omicron chapter of Iota Phi Theta we take pride in exemplifying what this great organization was founded upon: building a tradition and not resting upon one. Diversity, leadership, and passion are all things that come to mind when describing the chapter atmosphere. With brothers ranging from Haiti, Japan, Germany, and Dominican Republic we are excepting of anyone who displays promise and drive to excel here at the University of Florida. Well on the rise and not the run, Gamma Omicron is sure to continue to be one the premiere Greek organization here at the University of Florida. NATIONAL HISTORYPERSPECTIVE …1963 was a turbulent year. History-making events occurred that would radically and permanently affect the country as a whole, and African-Americans in particular …On April 12, America watched with horror and outrage as Birmingham Police Chief Eugene “Bull” Connor and his officers used water hoses and police dogs against peaceful civil rights demonstrators. On June 12th, Medger Evers, NAACP field secretary and civil rights leader, was assassinated at his home in Jackson, Mississippi by a segregationist. On August 28th, 250,000 people participated in the historic “March on Washington” and heard Martin Luther King, Jr. deliver his historic “I Have a Dream” speech… Three weeks later and less than 50 miles away, in Baltimore, Maryland, another group of men would make a different kind of history.BEGINNINGS …On September 19, 1963, at Morgan State College (now Morgan State University), 12 students founded what is now the nation’s fifth largest, predominately African-American social service fraternity: The Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated. The founders of Iota Phi Theta were: Albert Hicks, Lonnie Spruill, Jr., Charles Briscoe, Frank Coakley, John Slade, Barron Willis, Webster Lewis, Charles Brown, Louis Hudnell, Charles Gregory, Elias Dorsey, Jr., and Michael Williams. This group of men was unique for several reasons. First of all, many were long-time friends. Spruill, Coakley, Dorsey, and Gregory had known one another since grade school, and Spruill and Coakley’s friendship extended to when the two were pre-schoolers.Iota Phi Theta, 1964Even more uniquely, many of these men were what are now referred to as “Non-Traditional Students” and were 3-5 years older than the average college student. Gregory, Willis, and Brown were all service veterans, and Brown, Hicks, and Briscoe were married with small children. Of this group of 12, several were also working full-time jobs and all were full-time students.Based upon their ages, heightened responsibilities, and increased level of maturity, this group had a slightly different perspective than the norm for college students. It was this perspective from which they established the Fraternity’s purpose, “The development and perpetuation of Scholarship, Leadership, Citizenship, Fidelity, and Brotherhood among Men.” Additionally, they conceived the Fraternity’s motto, “Building a Tradition, Not Resting Upon One!”GROWTH …The Fraternity functioned as a local entity until the first interest groups were established in 1967 at Hampton Institute (Beta Chapter) and Delaware State College (Gamma Chapter). Further expansion took place in 1968 with chapters being formed at Norfolk State College (Delta Chapter) and Jersey City State College (Epsilon Chapter). The Fraternity was officially and legally incorporated on November 1, 1968 as a National Fraternity under the laws of the State of Maryland. Today, Iota Phi Theta consists of 249 chapters located in 40 States as well Japan, Korea and the Bahamas. The first steps toward moving the Fraternity from a regional to a more national scope were taken with the creation of Upsilon Chapter (Southern Illinois University) in 1974. It was also during this period that the Fraternity’s first 4 Graduate chapters were formed: Alpha Omega (Baltimore, MD, 1965), Beta Omega (Washington, DC, 1970), Gamma Omega (Hampton, VA, 1973), and Delta Omega (Boston, MA, 1973).These chapters created the framework for the growth and development of the organization in the Northeast, Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest Regions of the country. The next regional expansion occurred in 1983 with the establishment of the Alpha Chi (San Francisco State University) and Xi Omega (San Francisco Alumni) chapters in California.Today, Iota Phi Theta consists of almost 250 chapters located in 40 States and the District of Columbia. The scope of the organization extends throughout the nation, from California to New York; from Wyoming to Florida; and from Wisconsin to Japan and the Republic of Korea.SUMMARY …As Iota Phi Theta continues to grow and strengthen, so will its commitment to make meaningful contributions to society in general, with particular emphasis in the African-American community. Throughout America, Iota Phi Theta has come to represent excellence in all areas. The Fraternity is, and shall forever remain dedicated to its founders’ vision of “Building a Tradition, Not Resting Upon One!”

SweetHearts
SWEETHEARTSIota Phi Theta Sweethearts are a recognized, respected and honored tradition of the Fraternity and have a long history of affiliation with Iota. This history harkens back to the days of our Founding and the circumstances of the day.In the early 1960′s at Morgan State University, Iota Phi Theta was blessed to have an invaluable ally in the person of Ms. Audrey Brooks. Ms. Brooks was a member of the Morgan State University staff and in this capacity, she played a crucial “behind the scenes” role for the Fraternity. In many instances, her actions and influence provided much needed protection and support for the fledgling organization. The spirit and dedication of Ms. Brooks lives today through the Iota Phi Theta Sweetheart Organization and with good reason. As Iota Phi Theta navigated the rocky waters of our early years, the Brotherhood could always count on the support of our Sweetheart organization. Be it serving as hostesses for a national meeting or as a support team at a stepshow, our Hearts have always been there … on the front lines … providing vocal and moral support for the Brothers of Iota. Today, Iota Sweethearts (many of whom are wives of Iota Men) continue to support the organization in a major way.Like many things about Iota Phi Theta, our Sweetheart organization represents a departure from the norm as practiced by other groups. Most notably, Iota Phi Theta Sweethearts do not “pledge.” Additionally, the Iota Sweetheart organization is not to be seen or construed as a substitute for a Sorority. In fact, thousands of Iota Sweethearts have gone on to join NPHC sororities. Iota Phi Theta is an avid supporter of these sororities and their activities. In keeping with this support and respect, we frown upon any activities undertaken by our Sweetheart Organization that might be seen as competitive to, or disrespectful of, these organizations. In a Sweetheart Workshop held during the 1999 Iota Phi Theta Conclave, Ms. Brooks stated, “The Purpose of Iota Sweethearts is to smile and be gracious on behalf of Iota. Anything else is inappropriate.” As in all things, we endorse Ms. Brooks’ view on this subject wholeheartedly.Iota Sweethearts hold a special place in the hearts and minds of the Brotherhood and we are dedicated to their uplift, support, and respect!
NPHC
NPHCThe National Pan-Hellenic Council, Incorporated (NPHC) is currently composed of nine (9) International Greek letter Sororities and Fraternities: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. In 1931, Alpha Phi Alpha and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternities joined the Council. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority joined in 1937 and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity completed the list of member organizations in 1997.The stated purpose and mission of the organization in 1930 was “Unanimity of thought and action as far as possible in the conduct of Greek letter collegiate fraternities and sororities, and to consider problems of mutual interest to its member organizations.” Early in 1937, the organization was incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois and became known as “The National Pan-Hellenic Council, 1906 Cornell University Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity1908 Howard University Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority1911 Indiana University Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity1911 Howard University Omega Psi Phi Fraternity1913 Howard University Delta Sigma Theta Sorority1914 Howard University Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity1920 Howard University Zeta Phi Beta Sorority1922 Butler University Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority1963 Morgan State University Iota Phi Theta Fraternity
